Passage: Genesis 37:12-36
Wisdom for Life’s Detours
Genesis 37:12–36
You’re driving down the road, making good time, and everything is going smoothly—until the unexpected happens. Brake lights. Road closed. Detour ahead.
Life often works the same way. Just when we think we’ve found our path, something forces us off course. Sometimes it’s a consequence of our own choices, and other times it’s something done to us—completely outside of our control.
In this week’s message, we explore how Joseph—favored by his father but hated by his brothers—encounters a detour that would change everything. What started as a simple trip to check on his brothers turned into years of separation, hardship, and suffering. But it was not without purpose.
From Genesis 37, we see that:
Detours are often unexpected and unwanted
Obedience to God doesn’t always lead to comfort
Painful turns can be part of God’s greater plan
What people intend for harm, God can use for good
Joseph’s story reminds us that God is not absent in our detours. In fact, He may be using them to bring us exactly where He wants us. What looks like a setback to us may be the very path God is using to accomplish His purpose.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Why this road? Why now?”—this message is for you. Be encouraged to trust in the unseen hand of God, who leads with wisdom even when the way seems unclear.
Watch the full message now and find hope in the detours of life.
