When we think of Elijah, we often picture the bold prophet who stood before kings, called down fire from heaven, and confronted the prophets of Baal. But Scripture reminds us that Elijah was a man like us. He experienced courage and fear, victory and disappointment, provision and deprivation, mountaintops and valleys.

Elijah lived during dark days of compromise and idolatry, yet God raised up an ordinary man willing to stand for extraordinary truth. His story reminds us that “the story of Elijah is not the story of a great man, but of a great God working through a very human man.”

As we begin our Ups & Downs series, Elijah's life gives us two important challenges: In a world of compromise, stand up for truth and stand out from the crowd. And through life's ordinary ups and downs, learn to trust an extraordinary Savior.
