Passage: Colossians 1:15-23

Hymn About Him
Colossians 1:15–23 | Foundations (Week 3)

In a culture that says we need “Jesus plus something,” Paul gives the church a first-century worship song that says Jesus is everything. This passage lifts our eyes to the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ—and shows why a truly Christian worldview keeps Him at the center.

What you’ll hear
Why worldview matters: Colossae’s “mix-and-match” spirituality looks a lot like today—and Paul answers it with Christ.

  • WHO Jesus is (vv.15–19):
Image of the invisible God • Firstborn over all creation (preeminent) • Creator of all things • Sustainer who holds all things together • Head of the Church • Firstborn from the dead • Fullness of Deity dwelling bodily
  • WHAT Jesus does (vv.20–23):
Reconciles by the blood of His cross • Restores us to be holy, blameless, above reproach • Remakes us as we continue steadfast in the gospel—until He renews all things.

Big idea

When Jesus is first, everything else finds its proper place. When anything else is first, everything wobbles.

Takeaways

  • Don’t trade the sufficiency of Christ for trendy “Jesus-plus” add-ons.
  • Let your worship shape your worldview—sing truth that exalts Christ.
  • Keep going: true faith perseveres—stable, steadfast, not shifting from gospel hope.

Reflect & respond

  1. Where have I been tempted to add something to Jesus to feel “complete”?
  2. What would it look like for Jesus to be first place in my time, relationships, and decisions this week?
  3. Who needs to hear that reconciliation with God is available only through Christ?
